Not Back to School Camp
The Vermont session of Not Back to School Camp, named "Firefly Song," runs September 1 to 10, 2026, an extended 8-day, 9-night stay at Farm & Wilderness in Plymouth, Vermont. Founded by Grace Llewellyn, this secular unschooling camp brings teens together for a self-directed community of mentors, workshops, and peers. As the organizers describe it, the session "incorporates all the NBTSC classics," including workshops, talent shows, bonding night, prom, trust circle, seeing and seen circles, and the closing ceremony. Campers stay in rustic three-sided cabins with a lodge and fireplace, playing fields, and waterfront access at Woodward Reservoir for canoeing and swimming. Tuition covers programming, meals, and lodging, with financial aid and diversity scholarships available, and transportation options from White River Junction, Burlington, and beyond.
Started in 1996 by Grace Llewellyn, author of The Teenage Liberation Handbook, NBTSC is a long-running residential camp where homeschooled and unschooled teens gather for multi-night sessions in Oregon and Vermont. Squarely secular, it lives out the unschooling philosophy: campers choose from an eclectic mix of camper- and staff-led activities rather than following a fixed curriculum. The result is a tight, self-directed community where teenagers from across the U.S. and Canada find peers, mentors, and confidence in their own learning paths.
