Not Back to School Camp
This Oregon session of Not Back to School Camp runs August 5 to 19, 2026, fourteen nights at Camp Myrtlewood in Oregon's coastal mountain range. Founded by Grace Llewellyn, the secular unschooling camp gathers teens roughly ages 13 to 18 for a self-directed community of mentors, peers, and workshops. The long format offers abundant time together for building friendships, alongside camp classics: workshops, talent shows, bonding night, prom, trust circle, seeing and seen circles, and a closing ceremony, plus an optional coastal day trip and three sleep-in days for self-care. This is the second of two back-to-back Oregon sessions. Organizers suggest the two-week stay best suits campers with prior overnight experience away from parents. Transportation is available from Eugene.
Started in 1996 by Grace Llewellyn, author of The Teenage Liberation Handbook, NBTSC is a long-running residential camp where homeschooled and unschooled teens gather for multi-night sessions in Oregon and Vermont. Squarely secular, it lives out the unschooling philosophy: campers choose from an eclectic mix of camper- and staff-led activities rather than following a fixed curriculum. The result is a tight, self-directed community where teenagers from across the U.S. and Canada find peers, mentors, and confidence in their own learning paths.
